The Gimkit Alternative for Rooms That Aren't Classrooms

Gimkit turned review into an economy game, and middle-schoolers love it. Adult learners and accreditation bodies want something else from the same fifteen minutes.

Gimkit started as a high-school student's class project in 2017 and still carries that DNA: students answer questions to earn in-game currency, then spend it on upgrades and power-ups inside game modes like Trust No One, Fishtopia or Capture the Flag. It is genuinely clever design, the free plan rotates a handful of modes with no student cap, and Pro at $14.99 a month unlocks the rest plus Assignments for homework.

The limits show up the moment the session is not a classroom review. Kits hold two question types — multiple choice and text input. There is no LTI 1.3 integration, so nothing launches from Canvas, Brightspace or Moodle and no grade is written back; teachers who need scores in Google Classroom reach for third-party extensions. There are no courses, no pass marks and no certificates, and an open-text answer can only be matched against up to four accepted strings rather than graded on meaning.

InsightQuiz covers the live moment and the paperwork around it. Nine question types including cloze text, sorting, sliders, rating scales and short answer with fuzzy matching; sessions for 30 people free and up to 2,000 on Business; self-paced lessons and courses that end in a pass mark and a dated PDF certificate; SM-2 flashcards; AI grading for written answers; and a diagnostic report naming the three weakest concepts. Where Gimkit is clearly ahead: game-mode variety, the sheer fun of it, and a free plan with no participant ceiling on its rotating modes.

Currency game or learning record

Gimkit's central mechanic is money. Correct answers pay out, students buy upgrades, and the upgrades change how fast the money comes in — which is why questions get asked dozens of times per session and why speed beats depth. For a Friday review of vocabulary that is a feature. It is also why a sizeable share of Gimkit's own search traffic is people looking for bots and hacks to farm the currency.

InsightQuiz measures instead of pays out. Each question carries a difficulty and a concept tag; the report afterwards shows the three weakest concepts, a difficulty map plotting response time against success rate, a guessing-suspicion indicator and a competency radar per person. Completion can require a pass mark and produce a dated certificate. It is the difference between a game that happens to use your questions and a record of what people actually know.

Choose InsightQuiz when

  • Your learners are employees, professionals or higher-education students
  • You need more than multiple choice and text input
  • Completion has to produce a certificate or an audit record
  • Content must launch from Canvas, Brightspace or Moodle with grade passback
  • Written answers need grading on meaning, not string matching

Stay with Gimkit when

  • You teach K-12 and the game modes are what keep the class in the room
  • You want a free plan with no participant cap for casual review
  • Live Learning Games and Fishtopia are part of your classroom culture
  • You never need an LMS integration or a completion certificate

Bring your kits with you

Export a kit as a spreadsheet and import it in the InsightQuiz editor — columns are mapped automatically and you preview everything before it is saved. Or upload the source PDF and let the AI generator rebuild the question set with distractors that diagnose rather than decorate.

Common questions

No, and that is a deliberate difference. There are no upgrades, no in-game currency and no Fishtopia. What exists is a live session with a countdown, streaks, points, a real-time leaderboard and podium — enough competition to keep a room engaged, without a second economy for people to game.

Not natively, as far as its public documentation goes — teachers rely on manual export or third-party browser extensions to move scores into Google Classroom. InsightQuiz supports LTI 1.3 with Canvas, Brightspace and Moodle, including deep linking and automatic grade passback to the gradebook.

Thirty on the free plan, 100 on Solo, 500 on Team and 2,000 on Business, at a flat price regardless of attendance. Participants join with a 6-digit PIN or a QR code, with no account and no app.

Nine: multiple choice, multiple response, true/false, short answer with fuzzy matching, cloze text, sorting, rating scale, slider and open text with AI grading. Questions can carry images, and open answers are evaluated on meaning rather than against a list of accepted strings.
