The Nearpod Alternative Without a 90-Student Ceiling

Nearpod is a well-made K-12 lesson tool. If your room holds 200 people, or your learners are adults who need a certificate, the maths stops working.

Nearpod's core idea is a good one: take the slide deck you already teach from and make every third slide interactive — a poll, a draw-it, a matching pair, a virtual field trip. Renaissance acquired it in 2021 and the product sits inside a K-12 assessment portfolio, with a large library of ready-made lessons and a Google Slides add-on.

The constraint most people hit is the join limit. The free Silver tier allows 40 students per lesson, Gold at $159 a year allows 75, and Platinum at $397 a year allows 90. Only the quote-only School & District plan reaches 250. For a lecture hall, a conference workshop or an all-hands training that number is the whole conversation, and there is no corporate or L&D tier to move up to — Nearpod does not sell one.

InsightQuiz sizes differently and finishes differently. Thirty participants on the free plan, 100 on Solo at $14.90 a month, 500 on Team, 2,000 on Business — flat, regardless of how many people show up. After the session there are self-paced lessons, multi-lesson courses with a pass mark and a dated PDF certificate, SM-2 flashcards, AI grading for written answers and a diagnostic report. Where Nearpod is clearly ahead: its K-12 lesson library, the Google Slides add-on, VR field trips and interactive video, and drawing-based activities for younger learners.

A lesson tool for children, a learning platform for adults

Nearpod was designed around a teacher standing in front of a class of thirty with a projector. Every design decision follows from that: joins are capped in the double digits, activities lean visual and playful, student accounts only appear on the district plan, and there is no corporate tier at all. Inside that frame it is genuinely good software.

InsightQuiz assumes the session might be a 300-person conference workshop, a 500-person compliance rollout or a university cohort launching the activity from Canvas. Sessions scale to 2,000 without a quote, results are diagnostic rather than decorative, completion produces a certificate and a record, and the course keeps running self-paced after everybody leaves the room.

Choose InsightQuiz when

  • More than 90 people need to join one session
  • Your learners are employees, professionals or higher-education students
  • Completion has to produce a certificate or a compliance record
  • You want monthly billing instead of an annual teacher licence
  • Content has to launch from Canvas, Brightspace or Moodle with grade passback

Stay with Nearpod when

  • You teach K-12 and want thousands of ready-made lessons
  • Your teaching lives inside Google Slides
  • VR field trips, draw-it and interactive video carry your lessons
  • Your district already buys the Renaissance portfolio

Bring your question banks with you

Import existing question sets from a spreadsheet, or upload a PDF of your material and let the AI generator draft the questions. Both run in the InsightQuiz editor with a preview before anything is saved, and PDF processing happens in your browser.

Common questions

Thirty on the free plan, 100 on Solo, 500 on Team and 2,000 on Business, at a flat price that does not move with attendance. Nearpod allows 40 joins per lesson on its free tier, 75 on Gold, 90 on Platinum and 250 on the quote-only district plan.

Not as a published product. Nearpod's pricing covers individual teachers and schools or districts; there is no business tier in its public pricing. If you are running workplace training, you are buying a K-12 licence and hoping it fits.

Yes, but differently. InsightQuiz lessons are built from content blocks — text, image, video, embedded question, rating scale, slider, sorting task — that learners work through at their own pace, with a pass mark and a certificate at the end. What InsightQuiz does not have is a Google Slides add-on that turns your existing deck interactive; if that workflow is central to you, Nearpod is stronger.

In the EU, Frankfurt region, encrypted in transit and at rest and isolated per workspace by row-level security. Participants join with a name and a PIN, so no participant accounts or email addresses are created, and session data is deleted automatically on a schedule you configure. We sign a DPA, honor CCPA/CPRA requests and will sign a FERPA school-official addendum. We do not hold a SOC 2 Type II report today.

Group average, the three biggest knowledge gaps, a difficulty map plotting response time against success rate, an engagement curve across the session, a guessing-suspicion indicator and a competency radar per participant. Everything exports to CSV, and quiz, survey and course reports also export as PDF.
